Rodriques responded to a pre-facoeff shove from Marco Rossi by striking the Canucks centre in the upper chest Saturday

The NHL Department of Player Safety has fined New Jersey Devils center Evan Rodrigues $5,000 for a high-sticking incident involving Vancouver Canucks center Marco Rossi. The play occurred during Saturday's game, in which New Jersey earned a 4-1 victory. Rodrigues caught Rossi with an upward stick motion following an altercation prior to a face-off with 10 seconds remaining in the second period.
The $5,000 penalty represents the maximum fine permitted under the Collective Bargaining Agreement for high sticking. Rodrigues was assessed a double-minor penalty during the game, though Canucks head coach Manny Malhotra expressed frustration post-game that the action did not warrant a stiffer spearing penalty.
