The Vancouver Canucks finished last in the league in the 2025-26 NHL season, and by a considerable margin of 14 points. Fans and media alike knew the 2026-27 season would be much the same, but some weren’t sure how likely…

Stephan Roget examines the historical rarity of teams finishing last in the NHL in consecutive seasons, noting that the Vancouver Canucks are on pace to repeat their 2025-26 last-place finish. Through the first 16 games of the 2026-27 season, Vancouver sits at the bottom of the league with a .219 points percentage.
Roget highlights that consecutive last-place finishes have occurred only nine other times in the Canucks' 56-year history. Previous franchises in this position, including the Washington Capitals, Pittsburgh Penguins, Quebec Nordiques, and San Jose Sharks, achieved varied rebuilding outcomes through subsequent draft selections.
