Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin announced on Monday that his 22nd NHL season will be his final one. The 41-year-old made the decision alongside his family, sharing the news via team social media and informing teammates prior to practice at Medstar Capitals Iceplex. The announcement comes ahead of the Capitals' home opener against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday night.
Ovechkin, the NHL's all-time regular-season goal-scoring leader, previously surpassed Wayne Gretzky's record of 894 career goals by reaching his 895th goal and adding 32 more.
