The Washington Capitals defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-3 on Wednesday at Capital One Arena during Alex Ovechkin's final home opener. Washington's top line of Alex Tuch, Pierre-Luc Dubois, and Tom Wilson dominated the contest, combining for three goals as the Capitals built an early lead and held off a Pittsburgh rally.
Wilson led the offense with three points, while Logan Thompson stopped 27 of 30 shots to preserve the victory. Pittsburgh pulled within 4-3 in the second period, but a power-play goal by Ryan Leonard and a perfect penalty kill secured Washington's win.
