The Story in 60 Seconds

Tonga defeated England 30-12 in Perth in their opening match of the 2026 Rugby League World Cup, severely damaging England's chances of reaching the semi-finals. Despite dominating early territory, Brian McDermott's side failed to capitalize and trailed at halftime following a try from Stefano Utoikamanu and points from Isaiya Katoa.

England responded after the break through AJ Brimson, but Tonga seized control with two quick tries from Haumole Olakau'atu and Toluta'u Koula, both of whom later secured doubles. Dom Young scored England's second try, but the defeat leaves them requiring major victories against Papua New Guinea and France alongside outside results to advance.
