The Story in 60 Seconds

New Zealand Rugby has commenced legal proceedings in the High Court of New Zealand against the Australian Rugby League Commission over the naming of the NRL's expansion franchise, the PNG Chiefs. NZ Rugby is pursuing interim and final injunctions to block the use of the Chiefs name, asserting trademark rights for the Super Rugby team that has competed under that moniker since 1996.

The dispute comes after ARLC executive chairman Peter V'landys previously maintained the NRL would not change the incoming team's name. Supported by a $600 million Australian government commitment ahead of its planned 2028 entry, the PNG Chiefs' jersey and logo are scheduled for unveiling on October 21, 2026.
