The Story in 60 Seconds

Wigan Warriors half-back Harry Smith has discussed his role under new England head coach Brian McDermott while reflecting on Jake Connor's omission from the World Cup squad. Smith noted that having strong competition in the halves is both a pleasure and a curse that inevitably leaves out quality players. The nine-time capped playmaker is positioned as the frontrunner for the scrum-half jersey in McDermott's 23-man squad heading into the tournament in Australia.

McDermott, who took charge in April, instructed Smith to replicate his club form by playing 'eyes up rugby' and controlling territory. England's group campaign opens against Tonga on October 17, followed by matches against France and Papua New Guinea. Captain George Williams and Mikey Lewis are the only other specialist half-backs selected.
