Brian McDermott has consistently talked about England having a "point of difference" in the Rugby League World Cup but eyebrows were raised when the head coach opted to leave Jake Connor out of the squad again.

England head coach Brian McDermott has selected his 23-player squad for the upcoming Rugby League World Cup, leaving out Leeds Rhinos back Jake Connor while selecting Mikey Lewis among the half-back options. McDermott explained that Connor was omitted because England requires a specific game model featuring a point of difference to compete with top nations, prioritizing Lewis due to his running style and proven record in major finals.
McDermott confirmed George Williams and Harry Smith were also selected alongside Lewis, with Hugo Savala offering additional cover. Furthermore, McDermott addressed the absence of Wakefield Trinity players, explaining that Jake Trueman, Mike McMeeken, Caleb Hamlin-Uele, and Tom Johnstone were initially in contention but withdrew due to scheduled post-season surgeries.
