November 1 marks what is expected to be the most frenetic free-agency period in NRL history. And the Chiefs are armed with tax-free money to lure a marquee No.7.
The PNG Chiefs have announced their intention to sign a marquee halfback as the NRL free-agency period opens on November 1. Backed by tax-free contract packages, the expansion franchise aims to assemble a competitive spine to qualify for finals in its inaugural season. Key halfback targets reportedly include Penrith's Nathan Cleary and the Sydney Roosters' Sam Walker.
The Chiefs have already signed Jarome Luai, Joey Manu, Connor Watson, Brian To'o, Zac Lomax, Alex Johnston, and Matty Lees. General manager of football Michael Chammas revealed the club has also tabled a four-year, $3 million offer to Gold Coast forward Cooper Bai while monitoring Canberra back-rower Hudson Young.
