Fiji are off to a winning start under new coach Jake White, with veteran playmaker Ben Volavola proving the difference against Japan.

Fiji secured a 34-28 victory over Japan in Tokyo during their first match under newly appointed head coach Jake White. Veteran playmaker Ben Volavola kicked two decisive late penalty goals to break a 28-28 deadlock and seal the win. Despite playing 20 minutes with 14 men after backrower Motikai Murray received a red card in the first half, the Flying Fijians held off a late surge by the Brave Blossoms.
Fiji's tries were scored by Kitione Salawa, Tevita Ikanivere, Tuidraki Samusamuvodre, and Terio Tamani. Japan kept the contest level with scores from Mamoru Harada, Lua Makisi, and a brace from Warner Dearns, but the hosts failed to capitalize on late second-half possession dominance.
