Secret document reveals New Zealand’s bombshell plan to abandon competition

A leaked New Zealand Rugby document has revealed a proposal that could see the country abandon Super Rugby entirely. The organization is reportedly considering three options to overhaul its domestic game, including a new eight to 10-team competition. This proposed league would replace both Super Rugby and the National Provincial Championship to address ongoing financial difficulties.

New Zealand Rugby is forecasting a cumulative loss of NZ$108 million between 2024 and 2028, despite generating record revenues. The country's five Super Rugby franchises have reportedly turned a profit without national union support only twice between 2019 and 2025. The proposals are set to be discussed at a major rugby summit.
