Cheslin Kolbe says rugby gave him an escape from the gangsterism and drugs that surrounded his childhood in Kraaifontein.

Springbok wing Cheslin Kolbe revealed that rugby provided him an escape from the drugs and gangsterism surrounding his childhood in Kraaifontein. Speaking on the For the Love of Rugby South Africa podcast hosted by former teammate Steven Kitshoff, Kolbe shared candid memories of growing up in Scottsville, where hearing gunshots during street rugby games was a regular occurrence.
Kolbe credited those harsh early challenges with building his mental and personal resilience. He explained that his upbringing now fuels his passion to mentor and inspire youth facing difficult circumstances across South Africa.
