A playing member of South Africa's domestic side the Lions has died of an apparent heart attack in La Rochelle a day before the two sides were due to meet in the European Champions Cup.

South African rugby player Hyron Andrews has passed away at the age of 31 following a suspected heart attack in France. Andrews was found unresponsive at the Lions' team hotel in La Rochelle on Friday, on the eve of their European Champions Cup fixture against La Rochelle. Emergency services were unable to revive him, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Andrews previously played 45 matches for English club Sale Sharks before rejoining the Lions in South Africa earlier this season. The Lions announced that their scheduled Champions Cup match against La Rochelle will go ahead as planned in his honor. European Professional Club Rugby confirmed that a moment of silence will be observed across all Champions Cup and Challenge Cup games this weekend.
