Former RLPA officials are now leading the fight for rugby players in an increasingly tense pay dispute with Rugby Australia, and time is running out for a deal.
Tensions between Rugby Australia and the Rugby Union Players' Association are escalating ahead of the October 31 deadline for a new five-year collective bargaining agreement. RUPA, led by former RLPA officials Adrian Turner and Tom Symonds, is demanding significant pay raises for men's and women's players alongside a share of the $100 million fee for co-hosting the upcoming men's World Cup. Rugby Australia has countered with increases to minimum spending and performance bonuses.
While player strikes are not expected due to existing contracts, unresolved talks could lead to protests such as boycotting commercial events or wearing protest apparel. Elsewhere, Australia A defeated the USA 61-12 in Nashville despite a David Feliuai red card, while the Wallaroos concluded their season with a third straight victory over Scotland in Canberra under coach Tim Walsh.
