The much-loved coach has been remembered as a 'true rugby man' and an 'absolute gentleman'

Welsh grassroots rugby figure David 'Dai' Tovey has passed away suddenly, prompting an outpouring of grief across multiple local clubs. Risca RFC announced that their youth coach, who was in his early 40s, died on Sunday morning, leaving behind his wife Carys and three children. The club expressed profound shock and sadness, describing him as a valued part of their rugby family.
Tributes followed from several other clubs where Tovey had featured as a player and coach, including Crumlin RFC, Oakdale RFC, Abercarn RFC, Hafodyrynys RFC, Pontllanfraith RFC, and Brynithel RFC. Fellow clubs remembered him as a tough competitor, an absolute gentleman, and a respected stalwart across grassroots rugby in Newport and Caerphilly.
