Former Wales captain Ieuan Evans has recalled delivering an after-match dinner speech in Japanese following Wales's first full test match against Japan in Cardiff in 1993. Evans consulted Cardiff University Business School to provide phonetic sentences recognizing strong Welsh-Japanese business ties, likely making him the first Welsh captain to do so.
The game also featured Evans scoring Wales's fastest test try after just 45 seconds following a loose Japanese pass. Although most of his international records have since been surpassed, Evans fondly remembered the rapid score and praised Japan's subsequent rise as an international rugby force.
