Coco Gauff endured a torrent of racist abuse at the hands of critics and trolls to the point that she now won't play at the Wuhan Open this week after she beat Xinran Sun.
Former tennis star Andy Roddick strongly condemned the racist abuse directed at Coco Gauff after an incident during her China Open victory against Xinran Sun. During the match, Gauff stopped play due to a flickering advertising board, prompting cheating accusations from critics and intense online abuse. Roddick defended Gauff's character and integrity, describing the abusive social media commenters as disgusting.
Following the online backlash, Gauff will reportedly not compete at the Wuhan Open. Tennis journalist Jon Wertheim also criticized the abuse, pointing out the lack of accountability on social media platforms and questioning the delayed response from the Women's Tennis Association.
