Korn Ferry Tour winner James Nicholas modified his golf footwear with memory foam to manage a severe foot injury sustained at the Open Championship. After injuring his foot jumping a wall at Royal Birkdale, Nicholas withdrew from the tournament and struggled to put pressure on his heel. To continue competing, he switched from his usual FootJoy Premiere Series shoes to the FootJoy HyperFlex Carbon LE and FootJoy Pro/SL models, adding custom memory foam inserts to shift weight away from his heel and into his arch.
Nicholas returned to competition in August and finished 30th on the Korn Ferry Tour points list, securing full tour status and entry to the final stage of PGA Tour Q-School. Having recovered, he transitioned back into FootJoy Premieres primarily for aesthetic preference and low-profile feel. MyGolfSpy highlights his experience as evidence that proper footwear fit, cushioning, and insole support are critical factors often overlooked by amateur golfers.
