Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Chris Tanev exited a game against the Colorado Avalanche due to an upper-body injury after playing only 3:29. Tanev, who is signed through the 2029-30 season at a $4.5 million cap hit, has appeared in just 16 games over the past two years. If his injury requires extended time off, Toronto could intensify its trade pursuit of Calgary Flames defenseman Zach Whitecloud.
Elsewhere in the Eastern Conference, the Washington Capitals are assessing roster depth ahead of facing the Seattle Kraken due to uncertain availability for Pierre-Luc Dubois and Matt Roy. Meanwhile, goaltender Alex Lyon is nearing a return for the Buffalo Sabres, potentially aiding a goaltending tandem that struggled with an .803 save percentage.
