An African nation has spoken out against F1 awarding a 10-year contract to Rwanda.

Democratic Republic of Congo Foreign Minister Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner revealed that she warned Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali that granting Rwanda a Grand Prix would be "morally indefensible." The warning preceded F1 agreeing to a 10-year deal to host the African Grand Prix at a purpose-built circuit in Bugesera, with racing expected to begin in the early 2030s. Wagner argued the event would help legitimize Rwandan President Paul Kagame amidst ongoing regional conflict.
The United Nations has reported that Rwandan troops actively support M23 rebels in eastern DR Congo, an allegation Rwanda denies. Human rights groups and Congolese authorities have also raised concerns over sportswashing and the illicit smuggling of Congolese minerals. In response, F1 stated that it believes sport serves as a positive force for good, emphasizing its commitment to high standards and economic benefits.
