JGR vs. Gabehart and Spire Motorsports: Here’s what happened on Day 1 of the discovery hearing, including trade secrets and Toyota disputes.

The first day of discovery hearings in the lawsuit involving Joe Gibbs Racing, Chris Gabehart, and Spire Motorsports ended without any immediate rulings. The court reviewed five motions addressing document production, metadata access, and disputes over alleged trade secrets ahead of a scheduled February 1, 2027 jury trial. JGR alleged that Gabehart retained access to team information through June on an unscrubbed device, though it was not shown whether he used or shared that data.
Third parties also raised discovery concerns, with Spire requesting the full technical agreement between JGR and Toyota Racing Development to assess ownership and potential damages. Toyota objected to releasing proprietary documents, while Hendrick Motorsports appeared as an interested non-party to protect its own sensitive competition data. The judge is expected to issue rulings on the pending motions on Monday.
