Marques Ackerman made his Test debut as an opener against Australia at St George's Park after Tony de Zorzi was ruled out through injury.
South Africa captain Temba Bavuma has backed debutant Marques Ackerman to establish himself in the Test opening role against Australia at St George's Park. Ackerman was called up to partner Aiden Markram after Tony de Zorzi was ruled out with an injury. The tactical reshuffle also saw Ryan Rickelton shift down the order to take over wicketkeeping duties from Kyle Verreynne.
Ackerman finished unbeaten on five runs alongside Bavuma on four, with South Africa reaching 20/2 during a rain-curtailed opening day. Bavuma acknowledged that the Proteas have frequently altered their opening combinations over the last two years as they seek stability at the top of the batting order.
