The decision not to extend Scoot Henderson could backfire for the Portland Trail Blazers.

The Portland Trail Blazers did not reach a rookie-scale extension with guard Scoot Henderson before the deadline, according to NBA insider Chris Haynes. Henderson, the No. 3 overall pick in 2023, is now slated to enter restricted free agency next summer. Blazers general manager Joe Cronin acknowledged Henderson as a high-priority player but cited difficulties negotiating with a high-variance player following an injury-shortened 30-game season.
Writer Reese Kunz argues that Portland made a mistake by failing to secure Henderson ahead of an anticipated breakout year. Kunz highlights Henderson's strong training camp, praised by teammate Jrue Holiday, and warns that an improved season could trigger an expensive bidding war in restricted free agency.
