Former New York Mets manager Carlos Mendoza was a candidate for the Seattle Mariners managerial opening before withdrawing his name, according to ESPN's Jorge Castillo. Mendoza subsequently joined the Philadelphia Phillies, where he has been hired as the team's third base and infield coach.
Mendoza was dismissed by the Mets in June during his third year as manager. The Mariners were seeking a replacement following the firing of Dan Wilson, while the Phillies decided to retain Don Mattingly as their manager after Rob Thomson was let go earlier in the season.
