A purple patch of form has left Wade one short of Ashton's 101-try landmark going into Friday night's Northern derby against Sale Sharks at Kingston Park.

Northampton Saints winger Tommy Freeman has emerged as a major future challenger to the PREM try-scoring record, boasting a league-best strike rate of 1.48 games per try among players with at least 50 tries. While Newcastle Red Bulls winger Christian Wade sits just one try behind Chris Ashton's record of 101 PREM tries, Freeman's rapid pace puts him on course to pursue the milestone in coming years.
Freeman currently has 60 tries in 89 appearances, tied alongside Wade at the top of this season's scoring charts with five tries following Northampton's 71-48 victory over Bath. Fellow Northampton teammate Ollie Sleightholme is also closing in on a milestone, needing five tries to reach 50 career league tries after scoring a hat-trick against Bath.
