It is thought the Premier League are pressing for City's punishment to be announced before the result of their appeal, which is unlikely to be decided before the end of January.

Insiders report that Manchester City are expected to face a massive points deduction ensuring relegation to the Championship alongside a heavy fine, rather than expulsion to League Two. The potential sanctions follow an independent commission finding the club guilty of the vast majority of 115 financial charges brought by the Premier League, with City currently appealing the ruling.
Oliver Holt argues that relegating City to the Championship represents fair middle ground compared to mid-season expulsion, which would disrupt the league campaign. The Premier League is reportedly pushing for punishments to be handed down before the appeal concludes, which is not expected before the end of January.
