On October 21, 2007, David Nalbandian defeated world No. 1 Roger Federer 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the final to claim the ATP Masters 1000 title in Madrid. The victory capped a historic run in which the Argentine overcame the sport's top three players consecutively, having already defeated Rafael Nadal in the quarterfinals and Novak Djokovic in the semifinals.
With this triumph, Nalbandian became the first and only player to beat Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic in the same tournament. He followed the victory two weeks later with another title at the Paris Masters.
