The Boston Red Sox will still be paying $4 million to Jordan Hicks in 2027, even though he now pitches for the Chicago White Sox.

The Boston Red Sox still owe relief pitcher Jordan Hicks $4 million in 2027 despite trading him to the Chicago White Sox in February. Boston acquired Hicks from the San Francisco Giants in June 2025 during the Rafael Devers trade. After Hicks struggled with an 8.20 ERA in Boston, the Red Sox traded him along with David Sandlin to Chicago in a salary dump, receiving pitching prospect Gage Ziehl in return.
To facilitate the permanent trade, Boston agreed to cover $8 million of the remaining $24 million on Hicks's four-year, $44 million contract, split evenly across the 2026 and 2027 seasons. The financial concession helped Boston drop below the second luxury-tax threshold, while Hicks went on to post a 3.94 ERA for Chicago in 2026.
