Who is Jason Kanzler? New name emerges in Mariners coaching search

The Seattle Mariners are interviewing 36-year-old Jason Kanzler, currently the Chicago Cubs director of player development, for their open managerial position. According to a report from The Athletic, Kanzler joins candidates Joe Espada and Rocco Baldelli in the search. Kanzler previously served as an outfield prospect in the Minnesota Twins system before transitioning to coaching, later joining the Houston Astros organization as a minor-league hitting coordinator and eventually coaching on their 2022 World Series championship staff.

Kate Preusser notes that Kanzler's background aligns strongly with player development, drawing comparisons to Seattle's Justin Toole and Andy McKay rather than traditional experienced managers. The writer argues that Kanzler's experience navigating prospect integration with the Cubs could suit the Mariners, who recently promoted multiple top prospects. Preusser suggests Kanzler's youthful energy could help reshape Seattle's clubhouse culture.
