Blake Butera retains his entire coaching staff for his second season as Washington Nationals manager

Washington Nationals manager Blake Butera is retaining his entire coaching staff for his second season in 2027 following an 11-game improvement in 2026. The staff retention was first reported by Spencer Nusbaum. Hitting coach Matt Borgschulte and his staff guided an offense that ranked inside the top five in major metrics, while catching coach Bobby Wilson helped improve Keibert Ruiz's defense.

Writer Sam Sallick argues that pitching coach Simon Mathews and assistants Dustin Glant and Sean Doolittle face a prove-it year in 2027. Despite Cade Cavalli's breakout campaign and overall team ERA dropping from 5.35 to 4.67, Washington posted the fifth-worst team ERA and set the all-time blown saves record in 2026.
