The Hillsborough law derives its name from the 1989 disaster where 97 Liverpool fans were killed in a crush at the Sheffield stadium…

The Public Office (Accountability) Bill, widely referred to as the Hillsborough Law, has successfully cleared its committee stage in the House of Lords. The legislation aims to create a legally enforceable duty of candor for public authorities and officials during investigations and inquiries. It takes its name from the 1989 disaster at Sheffield's Hillsborough Stadium, which resulted in the deaths of 97 Liverpool supporters.
During the debate, Baroness Levitt raised concerns that frontline emergency workers like paramedics are excluded from the proposed misconduct offenses. Justice minister Lord Lemos explained that frontline healthcare staff were excluded to avoid complex legal distinctions between public and private sector roles, confirming the Bill now proceeds to the report stage.
