Jake Oettinger’s historic pace masks a sluggish power play, buying time for the struggling Dallas offense as their league-leading back end suffocates opponents during a dominant opening run.

The Dallas Stars have opened their season with a dominant defensive stretch that is compensating for a sluggish offense. After a 3-2 overtime victory against the Winnipeg Jets, Dallas has held opponents to two or fewer goals in eight of their first 10 games, allowing just 16 goals total for a 1.60 goals-against average.
Goaltender Jake Oettinger leads the league with a 1.23 goals-against average, a .939 save percentage, and three shutouts. This defensive success relieves pressure on an offense averaging 2.50 goals per game, tied for fifth-worst in the NHL.
