Hayward Defends Stevens After Shock Jaylen Brown Trade to 76ers

Retired forward Gordon Hayward is backing Boston Celtics executive Brad Stevens, saying the decision to trade Jaylen Brown was based on more than just analytics.

Brad Stevens is under fire. The Boston Celtics boss stunned the league by trading franchise cornerstone Jaylen Brown to the rival Philadelphia 76ers. The move has Boston fans furious. The return of an aging Paul George and draft picks looks lopsided on paper.

Enter Gordon Hayward. The retired star, who played for Stevens in college and the pros, is coming to his old coach’s defense. He insists the polarizing decision wasn’t just a spreadsheet move. According to Hayward, Stevens uses every tool he has. “I think he puts in as much stock (in analytics) as he needs,” Hayward said on NBA Sirius XM Radio.

This trade completely reshuffles the deck in the East. Sending a prime All-Star to your biggest rival is a massive gamble, and Stevens is betting his reputation on it. But Hayward provides a crucial insight into his process. “I think Brad is extremely intelligent. I can tell you from first-hand experience from playing for him in college and the Celtics… I think Brad definitely looks at the analytics, uses the analytics, and then makes the decision based on that and his gut.”

That blend of data and instinct just sent shockwaves through the NBA. The move frees up future cap space for Boston but hands a top-tier scorer to a 76ers team desperate for a championship. The pressure is now immense. Every Celtics-Sixers game will be a brutal referendum on a trade that could define the Eastern Conference for the next five years.
