Pundits Jenson Button and Anthony Davidson agreed that the McLaren MCL40 looked nervous and "scary to drive" after observing Oscar Piastri during FP3 at the 2026 United States Grand Prix. Piastri struggled with track limits and severe understeer during the session at the Circuit of the Americas, eventually finishing in sixth place with a lap time of 1:35.531.
Piastri's McLaren teammate Lando Norris also faced handling issues, placing eighth in the session with a 1:35.706. The practice was topped by Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton on a 1:34.893, leaving both McLaren drivers over six-tenths of a second adrift ahead of qualifying.
