The Penguins have seen such mixed results that determining their forward units when/if this team gets healthy must feel impossible.

The New York Times evaluated and ranked the Pittsburgh Penguins' top 16 forwards early in the season, navigating a mix of injuries and roster depth. Captain Sidney Crosby was placed at No. 1 despite a slower start, while Andrei Kuzmenko was ranked at No. 16 following a difficult stretch with zero goals in eight appearances.
Evgeni Malkin was positioned at No. 2 after recording six goals in 11 games, followed by Bryan Rust, Egor Chinakhov, and Nick Robertson in the top five. The piece noted that five of Pittsburgh's top forwards were sidelined for a recent 3-2 overtime victory against the Nashville Predators.
