11 years ago, Roland Garros was ready to anoint Novak Djokovic at the pinnacle of tennis. Then came Stan Wawrinka.

Stan Wawrinka has retired from professional tennis after playing his final competitive match in Basel, Switzerland. The Swiss star concluded a decorated career that featured three Grand Slam singles titles, a Davis Cup victory, and an Olympic gold medal in doubles, highlighted by his famous upset of world No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the 2015 French Open final.
Coached by Magnus Norman, Wawrinka famously defeated Roger Federer and Djokovic en route to the 2015 Roland Garros title with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 triumph. He went on to defeat Djokovic again in the 2016 U.S. Open final before continuing to compete into his forties.
