Liberty Media CEO Derek Chang has faced a huge backlash from F1 fans online after he made comments regarding the sport's fandom which have proved highly controversial.

Formula 1 fans have criticized Liberty Media CEO Derek Chang following remarks he made regarding audience viewership and fan engagement. Speaking at the 'Formula One's Premium Playbook' event, Chang suggested that people no longer need to attend or watch every race on television to be considered fans of the sport. His comments came during a discussion about F1's United States broadcasting agreement with Apple TV, which took effect in 2026.
Supporters took to social media to voice frustration, with some accusing leadership of being out of touch, while others argued that following non-race lifestyle content does not constitute fandom. However, some observers and journalists defended Chang's remarks, noting that commercial engagement extends to merchandise, social content, and casual viewers brought in via initiatives like Netflix's Drive to Survive. F1's broadcast deal with Apple TV runs through 2030.
