The Story in 60 Seconds

Former Manchester United forward Carlos Tevez revealed that his controversial transfer to Manchester City in 2009 was motivated by revenge following a broken promise by Sir Alex Ferguson. Speaking on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, the Argentine striker explained that Ferguson had assured him during preseason in Los Angeles that the club would permanently buy out his contract, but that commitment was never fulfilled.

Tevez spent two seasons on loan at Old Trafford, scoring 34 goals in 99 appearances and winning six trophies before completing a £47 million move to Manchester City. The forward stated that Ferguson instead signed Dimitar Berbatov and started benching him in an alleged effort to lower his market value, which ultimately prompted his switch to City.
