Liverpool 1-1 Chelsea (6-5 on penalties): Alonso lost on his return to Anfield and, while the Carabao Cup is their least important competition, a first chance at silverware in a season without European football is gone…
Xabi Alonso endured a disappointing return to Anfield as Chelsea were eliminated from the Carabao Cup, losing 6-5 on penalties to Liverpool following a 1-1 draw in regulation time. Both goals in normal time came from penalties, with Morgan Rogers putting Chelsea ahead before Cody Gakpo leveled for Liverpool. The defeat marked Chelsea's fifth consecutive penalty shootout loss against Liverpool across various competitions.
The shootout was ultimately decided when Wesley Fofana missed Chelsea's final penalty into the Kop after Joe Gomez scored for Liverpool. The victory sends Liverpool through to face Bournemouth in the quarter-finals, while Alonso's side lost their first opportunity to claim domestic silverware in a season without European competition.
