Key Things to Know
  • Scottish Premiership matches could be broadcast live at 3pm on Saturdays starting from the 2029-30 season.
  • The SPFL invited tenders for a four-year broadcast cycle covering 2029-30 through to 2032-33.
  • One potential outcome would allow a single broadcaster to show every top-flight Scottish league game.
The Story in 60 Seconds

Scottish Premiership matches could be shown live at 3pm on Saturdays under plans for the next broadcast rights cycle starting in the 2029-30 season. SPFL bosses are offering broadcasters the opportunity to screen every top-flight match, anticipating the end of the long-standing traditional Saturday afternoon blackout window across the home nations.

The tender for the four-year cycle running from 2029-30 through 2032-33 provides flexibility for bidders not to enforce Article 48 blocked-hours restrictions. The move relies on the belief that the FA, SFA, and Irish FA will no longer enforce the blackout period, which currently restricts UK broadcasts between 2:45pm and 5:15pm.
