The Story in 60 Seconds

The Arizona Diamondbacks are considering moving 10-time Gold Glove third baseman Nolan Arenado across the diamond to first base for the 2027 season. Diamondbacks general manager Mike Hazen revealed the potential positional shift, noting that Arenado is open to participating in winter ball to prepare for the switch. The 35-year-old veteran has never played a defensive position other than third base across his 1,876 career MLB games in the field.

According to Hazen, the transition is intended to reduce physical wear and tear on Arenado's body while providing Arizona greater roster flexibility in free agency. Arenado completed a strong first season with Arizona after arriving from the St. Louis Cardinals, posting 30 home runs, a .255 batting average, and an .806 OPS.
