CAF has confirmed a switch back for their continental tournament as a biennial competition, dismissing the potential in the short-term for the proposed CAF Nations League…

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially announced that the Africa Cup of Nations will return to a biennial format, reversing a previous decision to host the tournament every four years. Following a unanimous vote by the CAF Executive Committee, the governing body decided to shelve plans in the short term for the proposed CAF Nations League, which was deemed unlikely to generate enough immediate revenue to support continental football development.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe stated that reinstating the two-year cycle aims to protect the interests of member associations and African players abroad. Following the 2027 tournament co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, subsequent editions will be staged in 2028, 2031, and 2033, with no competition scheduled in 2030 due to the World Cup.
