San Diego Padres starting pitcher Michael King has opted out of his contract to become a free agent, walking away from two remaining years and $58 million. Under the terms of his previous deal, the 31-year-old right-hander receives a $5 million buyout for 2027, yielding an effective salary of $22 million for the 2026 season.
King entered free agency following an impressive campaign in which he registered a 2.59 ERA over 100 2/3 innings. The Padres hold a five-day window of exclusive negotiations to attempt to re-sign him, while general manager A.J. Preller assesses the club's offseason budget amidst limited starting rotation depth.
