England head coach Brian McDermott has reaffirmed his desire to continue leading the national team despite facing an expected exit from the Rugby League World Cup. England defeated Papua New Guinea 34-12, but the margin leaves them needing an improbable 47-point victory by Tonga over Samoa to reach the semi-finals. With his short-term contract concluding at the end of the tournament, McDermott stated he wants to establish a long-term four-year strategic plan.
McDermott confirmed that no formal contract talks have occurred with the Rugby Football League during the campaign, though he remains keen to lead England into the 2030 World Cup. Currently an assistant coach with the Gold Coast Titans, McDermott noted that solid foundational work was achieved with the squad in Perth over recent weeks despite challenging circumstances.
