“Don Mattingly needs Bryce Harper’s buy-in” – Phillies insider offers Yankees legend crucial advice on managing in Philadelphia

Phillies insider Jim Salisbury stated that newly appointed full-time manager Don Mattingly must secure the buy-in of superstar Bryce Harper to successfully implement his plans for the club. Mattingly, who took over as interim manager during the 2026 season with a 79-55 record, signed a two-year deal in October to lead Philadelphia full-time starting in 2027.

Salisbury noted that while veteran leaders Kyle Schwarber and J.T. Realmuto will likely support Mattingly, Harper's influence sets the tone for the entire roster. Additionally, ESPN analyst Paul Hembekides praised Harper's ability to adapt and reinvent himself, predicting the two-time National League MVP will eventually be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.
