From extending the Metro to the first Great North Run - 10 images that take us back four and a half decades…

Ten archive photographs document major events and everyday life in Tyneside during 1981, capturing a pivotal time for the region. Highlights featured in the imagery include the extension of the Tyne and Wear Metro service across the Queen Elizabeth II bridge into Gateshead, as well as the filming of the BBC television drama When The Boat Comes In in North Shields.
Sporting history was also highlighted, noting that football star Kevin Keegan was among the 12,000 competitors who participated in the inaugural Great North Run. Keegan's appearance in the race occurred twelve months prior to his high-profile move to Newcastle United.
