Frenkie de Jong made his first start of the season for Barcelona as a center-back during their 6-1 victory over Alavés. Due to numerous defensive injuries, manager Hansi Flick deployed the midfielder in defense, marking De Jong's first proper start at the position within Flick's system.
Writer Renato Gonçalves noted that De Jong looked comfortable and assured, praising his passing from the back, defensive coverage, and duel success. Gonçalves suggests that De Jong's performance may give Flick an option at center-back amid fierce midfield competition.
