Malcolm Marx has recalled how a schoolboy rugby intervention from former Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer helped shape his successful professional career.

Malcolm Marx has credited former Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer with altering his career trajectory by suggesting his switch to hooker during high school. Speaking on the Boks Unpacked X The Verdict podcast, the 94-cap South Africa international explained that he originally played as a flanker at King Edward VII School before Meyer recommended trying the positional shift.
Marx noted that learning key fundamentals like lineout throwing and scrummaging proved difficult early on, though former assistant coach John McFarland assisted him on off days. He added that overcoming the initial technical and mental challenges helped build his resilience as he developed into a World Rugby Player of the Year.
