The Spanish coach took over the club in January 2014 when they were four points above the Premier League relegation zone, with the Baggies having sacked Steve Clarke the following month.

Former West Bromwich Albion manager Pepe Mel is recovering in intensive care after suffering a stroke and undergoing successful surgery on Sunday. Real Betis, one of his former clubs, shared the news at the request of his family. The 63-year-old Spanish coach is currently receiving care at the Virgen del Rocio Hospital in Seville.
Mel has managed 16 clubs across his career, including two separate stints at Real Betis and a brief 17-match spell with Premier League side West Brom in 2014. Following the news of his medical emergency, organizations and former clubs including Rayo Vallecano and LaLiga released statements offering their support and wishing him a full recovery.
