The Story in 60 Seconds

The Athletic's Jonas Siegel suggests that the Toronto Maple Leafs may need to trade recently acquired winger Kirill Marchenko if they want to pursue Tampa Bay Lightning superstar Nikita Kucherov. Kucherov, currently playing on an eight-year, $76 million contract, reportedly informed the Lightning that he will not re-sign and is seeking a trade. While William Nylander would also make theoretical sense in a proposal, his full no-trade clause leaves Marchenko as the more feasible trade chip.

NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reported that Kucherov would consider a move to Toronto as part of his 10-team destination list. However, Christopher Moore highlights several hurdles for Toronto, including salary cap constraints and Tampa Bay's potential reluctance to send their top player to an Atlantic Division rival.
